Save your seats.. ;) Not the movie that I'm gonna talk about.. :) Its about the wonderful days I got to spend in Chellammal Vidyalaya in Nanganallur,Chennai.. Two years there and I got a score of friends for lifetime..
The school is located in a serene environment amidst a residential colony, the Hindu Colony. Though it doesn't have a sprawling campus that its alumni can brag about,it surely has a lot of collar-lifting things. ;) One small cycle-stand and an admin block with a library, computer lab, office room, principal room and middle level classes,a block for primary classes and one for the KG and Higher Secondary. They constructed a new block when I was there. And also the campus has a kutti pillaiyar temple, which most of us have never visited(atleast I haven't) ;) And a little space in the middle for I dont know what :P
So there that explains the infrastructure of the school.. ;) I went there for my 7th and 8th standard -the most joyous and playful stage before one gets into the vicious circles of public examination(
Gestures -within quotes). I remember the first class and the ones I saw,distinctly.. Maybe I didn't know then, that we would go a long way together.. :)
First it was N.R.Harini that I choose to talk about ;) The one who was with a ponytail that day.. ;) All I can say about her is,"semmmmaa vaaalu" :D She never left a water tank unattended if she visited someone's house :P She found joy in dealing with the simplest things on earth.. As my name came next to her in alphabetic order,we used to sit together during exams(not the
together together, but the order). She was the one who named me
kutti(which holds good even now within our group) to differentiate me from another Aishwarya in the class.Eventually even teachers there started calling me "kutti iyshwarya" :P She actually "learnt" Karate when the rest of us complained to attend those classes we had to,every week as an extra-curricular activity. She also went many levels(I exactly don't know the level now) :P I never miss a chance to meet this cutie-pie in every chance that I get..
And here we come N.Padmapriya.. :) I seriously don't know how we started talking or anything but it all seems so natural now.. We used to go back home in our respective cycles(mine was a kutti cinderella and many used to identify me as the
Girl with a cinderella cycle) together and when a particular speed breaker came,we used to join hands(leaving one hand from the handlebar) and sing
ponaal pogattum poda :P we still dont know why we did it but its a memory now and every time I see that place, though the speed breaker is not identifiable(Thanks to Chennai Corporation or the Alandur Municipality who were responsible),I replay those times. We visited each other on holidays and spoke for hours together on topics that I could'nt remember now. Out of school memories are the most with her.. Even after I left from Chennai,we had letters transferring and she fed me with details about new students and everything happening at school. We still are in touch and the relationship remains the same inspite of not being in touch constantly..
G.Durga.. My companion during our cycle raids on the way back home :D She always whats the "in-news" in the other section :P We had a spot where we used to stand and chat atleast for around 15 minutes about anything and everything..(Padma,me,Durga and RR)That was the best time of the day..The bestest thing I should say is when the school had the chance for sending the entries for the "Quest" by The Hindu. Both of us had bunked our Karate Classes and did a write-up on the school tour to Pondicherry and Thiruvannamalai(andha vayasula poga vendiya edamaadaaa adhu!!) and guess what...it was published.. :D Taking our career in the same stream,we are more
connected now ;)
R.Anusha.. I used to call her "kombu" ;P She was the one who sat next to me for two years and we were together in almost everything we did.. I got my nail-biting habit from her and its irresistible now :P But then we are not in touch anymore though friends on facebook.. We haven't met for years nor have we spoken on the phone.. :( I miss you di.. :( Hope we get in touch soon...
Sri Janani-the one who used to meditate like the world is gonna crash next minute(JK!) Mohanambal-who used to call me "Maria Montessori" God knows why :P
And many others that I got to know from here and are still in touch.. :) Now,the very important issue when you are at your early-teens.. ;) Guys! Fortunately for me,I got to know a special set of guys and have a good rapport with them till date from Chellammal.. :) Unlike many schools where the unwritten-constitution of the school says not to talk with guys, have separate staircase, classrooms and blah blahs,Chellammal was way too broad-minded :D We could talk, sit together and everything and there was a decent friendship that existed.. No gender saw the other like an alien nor did we pounce(too much I know) on each other. There were self-constructed limits and a healthy co-existence. I still wonder the school's approach in such matters.. But it was the right one you see.. :) Inspite of the link-ups and what-nots that you usually see in classes of such age,we maintain till-date a good relationship.. To name some,Ramakrishnan,Nagarajan,Vishal,Sudheev and many more too.. But these are the ones I'm in touch and I do meet them often,so.. :)
Anyone who studied in that school till around 2005 I guess, would never ever forget their Tamil classes if they were fortunate to have "Chandramoulishwaran" sir.. :) We call him "aiyya" fondly.. One path-breaking teacher he was and made the ever-boring language class,an interesting one.. :) His teaching methodology was unique and he formed groups in the class and ensured a healthy competition among the groups.. We used to play, read, debate and do everything connected and not connected to the subject. This definitely improved our knowledge beyond books.. Be it social issues or political issues or even cinema(he was a big time thalaivar fan),all of us had an opinion and got to know things. Unlike other teachers,he encouraged sports and whenever we visit his house even now,he doesn't miss a game of volleyball with the guys.. :)
The students of 8th standard had something to do instead of sitting in the class before prayers for the day started.. Yah.. It was called "Gate-Duty".. We had to help those small small KG students to carry their bags and guide them to their classes.. When girls did the "gate duty",guys had to do "cycle duty"(just arranging cycles in a better way)Though it was just weekly twice for us,I enjoyed those times.. It used to be so much fun to talk with those little ones, coax them to go to classes and what not.. And we started having our "regular" kuttis each..the ones who wouldn't go to class with anyone except us and who chose to wait till we came.. :') I had one such little guy from UKG called "ashwin".. Ha...! How will I forget his name.. I still remember his face..So cute he used to look.. :) His grandma waited till I came and left him with me,otherwise he would cry :D He would now be in his teens.. Gosh.. God knows where he is.. And there was a girl too..I dont remember her name but it started with "Y" and that wasn't a common name then..
This was the arena where I developed my oratorical, debating and theater skills..Many who know me in the later part of my life, would wonder if i possessed any of them at all.. Those were the days where I used to participate in every single competition and dramas were my forte be it Tamil or English.. :) The library introduced R.K.Narayan to me.. Though they used to give us "Famous Five" type books to read in the library hour, our librarian graciously let us lend other books too.. It all started with "The Dark Room" for me and I'm an RKNer now ;) Without him now,I know no solace..The school also made us "spiritually informed" if I can put it that way... Just Kidding :P They just taught us slokas from The Gita and recitals from various scriptures which is the reason why I got a liking to recite Sahasranamam everyday.. The annual exhibitions were something we eagerly waited, not just for bunking classes but then trading the departments we wanted to be in ;) When everyone wanted to be in the "Games Department",I would be the last one who would want to be there and as fate has its way,one year I were in that department :P Did something on Table-tennis and I got to know about Steffi Graf and Agassi.. :P When we were in 8th standard, they started a "math lab".. It was good and made me like cubes and cuboids for once in life atleast ;) We had "Spoken English" classes and the teacher whom I incidentally mentioned in one of my letters to Padma as "Spokey Ma'am" is called Spokey ma'am till date :P We loved those Spoken English classes because of her accent ;) She had a very good American Accent and it was really funny for us to hear someone speak like that in real life :P The best part is,I even like our Principal Mrs.Seethalakshmi Vishwanath.. :) She was a really nice lady.. :) I've never had a liking to any of the head of the institutions where I have studied except for her.. :)

That is the inauguration of Math Lab and in the Salwar behing,is Spokey ma'am aka Sujatha Ma'am and Mrs.Chitra Surya Narayan(English teacher for Higher classes and a terror who also happened to be Durga's mami) :P
An all-round scholastic development was their motto.. And they did fairly well according to me.. :) To some students like me,they gave the
happiest days in life, which we will cherish forever.. This is to the school, the people I came to know there.. :) <3
One last time I want to shout "EAST OR WEST,HCCV IS THE BEST" like we used to in those Sports meets.. :)
